Wireframing Software – Key Features

With wireframing software you can create low-fidelity prototypes of a software application, or website. Wireframes act as a blueprint for design specifications and there are many different tools available in this area. Choosing the right features for your project is also important. I’m going to discuss three of the main features I need from a wireframing tool.

In every wireframing tool you will find predefined UI stencils. These can vary in complexity. For your first wireframe, it may be sufficient just to have text block, headline and image holder UI elements. For more complex prototyping, you may wish to have high-fidelity elements, where you can select different formatting options and include interactivity for simulation.

In my projects, I often work with stakeholders who are not experienced in technical design. People in marketing, for example may not be aware of how to create dependencies in high-fidelity wireframing software. At times, however interactivity is not crucial in a prototype at that stage of a project. In contrast to paper prototypes most of the wireframes designed with wireframing software are interactive. Interactive means the applied UI elements in your wireframes aren’t only clickable, but also interactive. You can pick a date in a date picker or check a checkbox for example. Using wireframing software enables you to create more simplistic wireframes. More features in a wireframing tool don’t mean it’s more useful. If you don’t need them for your project, why should you have them then? But if you need a detailed high-fidelity prototype you shouldn’t use wireframing software, but a prototyping tool.

When it comes to choosing the right wireframing software, it can be difficult to make a decision. Not only do you have to check what’s most suitable for your current project, but if you are working with people who don’t have a programming background, the learnability of the application must also be taken into account.
